Aquamarine for March

24
Feb
2015

March’s birthstone, Aquamarine, is a beautiful gem which for many symbolizes the ocean and love, two things very close to the hearts of people here in Australia!

According to ancient Greek legend, Neptune, The King of the Sea, gave mermaids Aquamarine gems as gifts; bringing love to however was the lucky recipient. Aquamarine attracts many myths surrounding the ocean and good luck, reportedly bringing sailors good luck and a safe voyage. It is easy to see how this stone has come to represent the beauty of the ocean, with stunning light blues and the blue -greens strongly reminiscent of the ocean. These lovely, calming colours often arouse a variety of emotions in its wearer, such as harmony, trust, sympathy and friendship.

Aquamarines are ideal for everyday wear as they are quite hard and not easily damaged. Their ranging colours – from the palest light blue to a dark ocean blue make them beautiful gems that can be worn everyday with every outfit.

Aquamarines also are reported to help creating loving and supportive relationships, and are a great gift to give a loved one for their birthday or any special occasion.

Opals for October Birthdays

26
Sep
2014

As September draws to a close we here at Gillett’s cast our minds forward to the month of October. Warmer days, excitement for Christmas and spring blooms make us think of lovely days spent picnicking and enjoying our new long weekend! It’s not all about us though, and of course we think of our loved ones birthdays in the next coming weeks. The birthstones for October are Opal and Tourmaline. Opal is a uniquely special gift for an Australian born loved one as 99% of the world’s opals are found right here at home. Opal’s are a beautiful gem, with an array of colours available ranging from white, to blue to black. Opal is made from small silica spheres arranged in a regular pattern. The type of silica in Opals is chemically similar to quartz, but Opal silica contains water within the mineral structure. Precious Opal generally contains about 6-10% water. The vast number of colors in Opals are caused by the regular array of silica spheres diffracting white light, and breaking the light into the colors of the light spectrum. The actual range of color in a particular Opal is determined by the diameter and spacing of its silica spheres. The colors of an Opal can also change depending upon the angle of light incidence, so when an Opal is rotated, its color can change or disappear. This feature makes Opals extremely interesting and unique.

Tourmaline, October’s other birthstone, is just as unique and colourful as the Opal. Most tourmaline’s are found in a myriad of colors: yellow, green, red, blue, pink, brown, black. Some even have bi-colored properties. A valued bi-colored variety of tourmaline, found in Brazil, is called the “watermelon.” The outer edges of the gem are green, transitioning to a transparent white zone that gives way to a pink or light red interior.

Either of these gorgeous stones would make a wonderful gift for you loved one now, or for Christmas (its just around the corner!)

August Birthstone – the Peridot

15
Aug
2014

Ausgust’s Birthstone, the Peridot, is a lovely lime green, sparkling gem which looks perfect against Silver, White and even Yellow Gold. The bright, dancing green light that peridot’s emit make them perfect for a feature stone in a pendant, goregous as studs in earrings and beatiful large or small on dress rings.
The idea of birthstones is said to go back to ancient biblical times when the Breastplate of Aaron that was described in the book of Exodus in the Bible was said to hold the 12 different stones of the tribes he represented. These stones were then likened to the 12 signs of the zodiac, and so was born the correspondance between birth and a stone which may bring you happiness, guidnence and strength.

Peridot is a gemstone with a fascinating history, both in nature and culture. It is one of the oldest known gemstones, with ancient records documenting the mining of peridot from as early as 1500 B.C. It is a gem especially connected with ancient Egypt, and some historians believe that the famous emeralds of Cleopatra were actually peridot gems. In nature, Peridot is an unique gemstone, as it (along with the Diamond) is the only gem formed under the earth’s crust. Peridot forms deep beneath the earth and is brought to the surface through volcanoes and tetonic movement.

Peridot was first used a talisman in the ancient world and it has a longstanding mystical reputation. It was once thought to ward off anxiety, making men more articulate and facilitating successful relationships and marriages.

At Gillett’s we have a wide range of Peridot Jewellery at affordable prices, all images listed are available through our online store.

September Birthday Gift Ideas: Sapphire Jewellery

1
Sep
2011

Pandora pink sapphire earrings

As a kid, birthdays were something that you looked forward to all year. My daughter said to me the other day that her birthday was getting close. I told her that it wasn’t, it was 4 months away … and she said that yes it was getting close, it was only 4 months away! As you get a bit older though, you tend to buy things for yourself as you need them throughout the year. This not only puts a blank look on your face when people ask what you’d like as a birthday present; it also makes other adults incredibly difficult to buy for! The best solution is to buy people the things that they wouldn’t buy for themselves – usually that means something to make them feel special, treated and looked after. Jewellery is just the thing – and if your loved one’s birthday falls in September, an easy way to narrow down the jewellery search is by searching for September birthstone jewellery. The birthstone for the month is the sapphire – today we check out a few choice old favourites, and some of the new arrivals on the sapphire birthstone jewellery scene!

August Birthday Gift Ideas: Peridot Jewellery

1
Aug
2011

Striking peridot and diamond pendant

It’s a chilly time of year, but it can actually be pretty easy to warm a lucky girl’s (or guy’s!) heart with the right birthday gift. The August birthstone harks forward to warmer mornings, longer days, and a refreshed feeling throughout the world – the gem is the ultra-clear light green peridot. Birthstone jewellery makes for an easily personalised, longlasting and universally appealing gift for August-born women, men, girls and boys. Today we pick out a few of our most popular pieces of all time, as well as some of the newer peridot jewellery items for August birthdays in store.

Pandora Lovepods mixed three pod 18ct yellow gold necklace

Peridot yellow gold stud earrings

Pearl, green peridot and purple iolite earrings

The peridot pendant at the beginning of the article is a quintessential August birthstone jewellery piece, with its generously sized peridot and affordable 9ct gold base. That asymmetrical gold framing gives the pendant a very contemporary edge – a great choice for females at the cutting edge of fashion, or who like things a little quirkier! A 0.03ct brilliant cut white diamond accents the peridot and yellow gold … like a reflected sunbeam set against a backdrop of grassy fields and golden sunshine. Ahhhh! The peridot is an oval cut stone, and at 7mm x 9mm is quite large – this gives it a 2.1ct weight, and the overall pendant is 1.7cm long. The chain you see on the picture is for display purposes – if your birthday girl doesn’t have an all-purpose chain that this will suit, check out our chain selection.

The Pandora Lovepods necklace at right is more of a luxury birthday gift … but it really is one that will be treasured forever. The base is a bright, gentle 18ct gold, and the necklace features three ‘pods’ – one peridot, one blue topaz and one red topaz. Topaz is actually one of the alternative birthstones for August, making this an especially suitable birthday piece! The chain is 45cm long – high enough to sit nicely above the neckline of your loved one’s clothes and be shown off wherever they go! Although this is a luxury item, it’s designed as an everyday wearer, with its slimline design and the gemstones sized so that they accent outfits rather than overwhelming or clashing with other colours.

The beautiful oval-cut peridot earrings at right are an obvious match for the August birthstone pendant at the beginning of the article. If your budget doesn’t stretch to getting your loved one a matching set for their birthday, bookmark these earrings anyway for a ready-made Christmas present! The peridots are 6mm x 8mm,  the same proportions as the stone in the pendant, and they are also set in affordable (but beautiful!) 9ct yellow gold. If you’re buying a non-romantic present for a loved one (such as for your sister, mother or a platonic friend), birthstone earrings are especially suitable.

With their calm and mysterious under-ocean feel, the pearl, peridot and purple iolite earrings at right are quite different to most other birthstone pieces! The rounded, polished finish of the peridots and the iolites is not only a parallel for the pearls, but makes for a greater depth of colour … looking at them, you almost feel as if you’re watching seaweed waft around your face while staring outwards into the clouded purple depths! These gorgeous earrings are made for pierced ears – the post and butterfly fitting sit behind the joint of the top iolite and the top peridot stones. They are 4.5cm long – perfect if you want to add to your loved one’s costume or evening jewellery collection.

Remember, there’s actually an entire universe of jewellery waiting to unfurl into spring at Gilletts! Check out the rest of our August birthstone jewellery collection, or look into alternative options like carnelian and topaz jewellery if green’s not her colour. But most of all, keep looking – this little selection is just the icing on a much bigger cake!
