Amethyst for February Birthdays
If you’re buying for a loved one in February, they’ll either be an unconventional, individual, rebellious Aquarian – or a mystical, dreamy and sensitive Piscean. Either way, you’ll want to make an impression with your gift, giving something magical and individual. Jewelry is a great way to do that! It is long-lasting, personal, and can only add to your friend’s beauty (whether they prefer that beauty to be called handsomeness or prettiness!). Here we look at our top picks for jewelry that includes the February birthstone, the amethyst.
The February birthstone, the amethyst, is actually a violet colored variety of quartz, sister (or brother!) to the sweet, simple rose quartz that is also found quite frequently in jewelry. Ancient Greeks and Romans believed that it would protect against drunkenness, and instead of utilizing its beautiful royal depths and charm in jewelry, instead made flagons out of it. Although, I’m not sure what the point of drinking the wine was, if they didn’t want to get drunk from it … hmmmmmm! The color comes from an interplay of iron and aluminum in the mineral, and it is somewhat less hard than a diamond, sitting around 7 on the Mohs scale, where diamond is 10. However, this suits softer, dreamier Pisceans perfectly! The earrings are another great choice for soft and dreamy Pisceans – the drop style floats around their head in an ethereal, buoyant way, while the curves of the white gold sections at the attachment area look quite a bit like a Piscean’s favorite symbol – the infinity sign. These earrings have a total of eight amethysts, each 3mm across. The base is white gold, so is suitable for most skin types , and the post and butterfly style fittings make for a neater profile.
And Aquarians certainly don’t miss out on unconventional, unusual and unique gemstone jewelry for their February birthdays! The gorgeous blue and purple toned gemstone ring shown above features 3mm princess cut stones. This style of ring comes with a variety of different gem combinations, but in this one the amethysts at either end are teamed up with beautiful light blue topazes and a garnet in the middle, whose mysterious red depths are tempered by the gaiety (yes, the happiness!) of the topazes at either side. The base is 9ct white gold, helping keep the cost of this gorgeous piece down. The band is 4mm wide – small enough to look dainty on your Aquarian gal’s finger, but large enough for solidity. Its sister ring, the rainbow toned gemstone ring shown, has the same cut, size and layout of gemstones, but includes citrines, peridots and amethysts, set on yellow instead of white gold. Either one is quite individual as far as jewelry goes … enough to satisfy a rebellious Aquarian, anyway!
Pisceans don’t necessarily care whether everyone else is going to be wearing the same style of jewelry as them – they mind quite a bit more whether they like it or not! Pisceans go for swirling, mystical-type shapes in their jewelry, and the unusual horizontal set of the amethyst in the yellow gold ring shown is a great example of jewelry with flow, girl! The amethyst measures 5mm by 7mm and totals .73ct. This ring is quite easy to re-size, because of the simplicity of the band, so you can preserve the birthday surprise and quite easily have it re-sized locally. This is not a long or complex operation, and you may even be able to sneak one of her other rings into a jeweller’s without her noticing, and have the sizes matched! Genius
!
We were talking about flow and mystery for Pisceans, and while we normally like to look at several different styles of jewelry for each starsign, we couldn’t pass over either this ring, or the previous ring for Pisceans. The pear cut amethyst is quite similar in size to the stone in the previous ring, but is shallower. It weighs only .4ct, and makes you a saving of of this ring, as it has a similarly simple band. And you should even have enough to treat her out to dinner (or a stargazing session, if she is a typical Piscean) to wear it!
For Aquarians though, anything that is different to how most people like things will sit just fine with them! These beautifully layered gemstone earrings are a good example for Aquarians. Rather than a boring old ‘balance’ of gemstone weights and appearances, amethysts are made a feature in these earrings, and a rainbow of other colors means that these earrings won’t hide in the shadows, but will jump out to thwack people in the face with their stunning style! The amethysts are 10mm across, and to help keep the cost down the complementary stones are colored crystals, rather than actual citrines, garnets and peridots whose shades thy resemble. The hook fittings make for a freer feeling, and if you live with an Aquarian, you’ll know there is nothing they hate more than being stuck, tied down, or pinned!
However, you don’t need to go completely crazy buying unique jewelry for Aquarians this February – even simple pieces with a little twist on the usual will suit them well. You rarely see rectangular cut amethysts – or any rectangular cut gemstones, so these are perfect for Aquarians. The amethysts are 4mm by 6mm, and are set in white gold to be suitable for almost any skin type. This simple gift is also very budget friendly, and for ladies with doubly-pierced ears, make a great base pair of earrings while another pair takes center stage.
We mentioned that Aquarians like to be different – and we also mentioned that amethysts are the birthstone for February … so why limit your unique Aquarian to everybody else’s birthstone?! The Georgini brand ring at right features an enormous stone, actually a purple cubic zirconia rather than an amethyst, as one at that size would be both very difficult to find, and prohibitively expensive. However, your unconventional girl will love this just as much – the 22mm zirconia is surrounded by white cubic zirconias, and set in soft and cost-effective sterling silver.
While the poor old guys don’t get much of a look-in with amethyst jewelry, there are plenty of other options for them! They might not be so sad to leave the delicate, one-step-away-from-pink tones of amethyst to the girls, anyway
