August Birthday Gift Ideas: Peridot Jewellery
The birthstone poem originally published by Tiffany and Co., that set out the traditional array of birthstones as we know them, said that those born in August would remain unmarried unless they wore peridots. “The August born without this stone / /’Tis said, must live unloved; alone’. Nawh!! Pity the many, many poor women who couldn’t afford to buy peridots back in 1870, the pamphlet’s publication date. Or perhaps, don’t pity them … because it seems that many women managed to get married without the magical help of this nevertheless fresh, pretty and delightful stone! The not-very-subtle ways that Tiffany used to sell their peridot jewellery back in the 19th century don’t take anything away from the fact that peridots are a gorgeous gemstone for August birthdays; with a fresh, light colouring, an innate versatility, and a suitability for all budgets. All modern budgets, at least! Today we check out some beautiful peridot July birthday gifts from the range of birthstone jewellery on site.
If you’re looking for an August birthday gift for someone that truly delights in jewellery, you can’t go past the decadent oval cut peridot pendant at the beginning of the article. Peridots are an amazingly cost-effective stone … the 2.56 carats of gem in this beautiful pendant would cost tens of thousands of dollars if it was a diamond – you can grab the peridot and gold necklace for a coupe of hundred dollars. The stone measures 8mm x 10mm, and is set on 9ct yellow gold, to help keep the piece affordable. Stunning!
The peridot heart-cut earrings at right are another simple and romantic gift for gals born in August – one of their standout features is the unusual attachment method for the peridots! The gemstones are hung with attachments at the peaks of the love hearts’ curvature, but the entire arrangement is hung from the body of the earring, so the stone and setting sway at the same time. The gemstone themselves are 5mm from peak to bottom, and also from side to side, and they are set on non-allergenic 9ct white gold. A little piece of uniqueness, in a very affordable package!
Peridots and gold are best friends – the delicate freshness of the stone’s colour matches beautifully with the mellow richness of gold, whether it’s yellow or white. The Pandora Lovepods earrings at right are a great example, pairing up two brilliant cut peridots with 8ct gold. They are designed to match with the other jewellery from the Pandora Lovepods range – all of which packages up unusual, fresh and fun gemstones in the pure luxury of the teardrop-shaped 18ct gold envelopes. These earrings have a 3cm drop, but there are exact copies available with a 5cm drop and a 1cm solid (rather than swaying) drop also.
The colour of peridots isn’t particularly deep – we’ve been talking about it in terms like ‘light’ and ‘fresh’. It naturally matches up well with other gemstones that don’t overpower or dominate in the design – and the sterling silver pendant with blue topaz, amethyst, citrine and peridots is a good example. This is another pendant with a high gemstone weight for exceptionally low dollars … the main blue topaz at the attachment point is 9mm x 6mm in size, and the other stones are each 3mm in diameter – so there are much larger in real life than they appear in the photo. The entire necklace is 5cm long, and made of polished sterling silver, which is what gives this piece its fabulous price tag!
The purple amethyst and green peridot pendant at right has been a popular design for some time – the combination of a voluptuous flow, neatly sized gemstones and sparkling contrast diamonds is loved by many. There is an alternate version that incorporates six different coloured stones, plus diamonds as well, for those that like to keep their lives colourful! The base metal here is 9ct white gold, so those that have ‘issues’ with sterling silver (tarnishing type issues), can rest assured that this pendant will stay looking brilliant for many years. The pendant translates well from work, to casual weekends, to cocktail evenings – a great value and high rotation August birthday gift!
Peridots also feature heavily in the Pandora collection, whose designers love to be a little unusual in their jewellery creation, with gemstone choice a main focus of their creativity. The Green Twists Pandora Inspirations bracelet is an awesome example of how peridots, green cubic zirconias and sterling silver can work well together to create an elegant and endearing look. This bracelet is wonderful y itself, even if no other charms are ever added to it, but there is also plenty of room to personalise … both physically, and within the budget!
Perfect for white wine drinkers, the Pandora hanging peridot grapes charm at right is a very cute example of the way that gemstones are incorporated to tell a story within Pandora jewellery. The peridot is polished, smooth and spherical, and sits perfectly among the little bubbles of sterling silver that make up the rest of the charm. There’s a purple amethyst version of this charm as well … why not mix up the whites and reds … at least on your loved one’s wrist! Just like the rest of the Pandora collection, this ships to you for free within Australia.
Peridots may not be able to magically create marriages, as Tiffany and Co. suggested, but they can certainly make a special someone’s day this August! Check out the rest of our peridot jewellery if you haven’t quite hit upon the perfect piece – it is all within budget, and within the realms of the fantastic!
