Peridot is the birthstone for August
Certain gemstones are linked to astrology and different months of the year.
Peridot is the official gemstone for August. The alternative gemstones are Aventurine, Sardonyx, or Sapphire. Peridot is a gemstone used since ancient times, and it’s been found in some ancient Egyptian jewelry.
Peridot is rich and green in color and has a slight hint of gold. The tinge of gold is created by tiny deposits of iron. The richness of the color depends on how much iron is present in the stone.
The word Peridot is thought to come from an Arabic word faridat meaning ‘gem’. Another belief is that it’s from the French word peritot meaning ‘unclear’.
Birthstone jewelry has been around since ancient times and in 1912 the national association of American Jewellers created an official list of the gemstones that are associated with each month, which became known as the modern birthstones. The list includes primary birthstones and alternative stones.
All gemstones vary somewhat to each other in richness because they are all natural and have differing amounts of natural elements in each of them. Peridot contains the mineral Olivine that is a magnesium iron silicate. Olivine is a very common mineral, however to reach gemstone quality is very rare which is what makes peridot very special.
Peridot rings, peridot pendants, peridot bracelets and peridot earrings make excellent gifts for anyone, especially for those with a birthday in the month of August.
