Sapphire and Diamond White Gold Pendant

Sapphires are one of the oldest, toughest, and most valued gemstones. Along with diamonds, emeralds and rubies, they are a member of the ‘Big Four’ when it comes to jewelry. However, their gorgeous quality, clarity and hardness doesn’t meant that you’ll have to break the bank to get a birthstone gift for a loved one this September! We check out the varieties of different sapphires, and the jewelry they are used in to create gorgeous gifts!

Sapphires are nothing more than aluminium and oxygen - the chemical name for the mineral sapphires are made of is corundum, and its formula is 2 parts aluminium to 3 parts oxygen. Unfortunately, leaving your Alfoil out in the open air won’t get you sapphires, though! Sapphires come in all different colors, including black, grey and clear, but when they are red, they are known as rubies. Rubies vary in color down to a lighter pink, and it seems that when they pass a certain hue marker the stones are called pink sapphires rather than rubies.

The piece at the beginning of the article is a gorgeous, classical integration of sapphires into jewelry. Deep blue sapphires like this one are a highly sought after stone, and they are usually teamed up with quality base metals and accent stones. This sapphire is set with three genuine white diamonds. The sapphire weighs .55ct, measuring 5.5mm x 4mm, while the three diamonds combined weigh 0.07ct. The stones are set on 18ct white gold, to create a beautiful heirloom piece that will still be around for your grandchildren’s children.

However, sapphires are not an outdated stone by any means. The variety of colors means that there are plenty of possibilities with sapphires, as demonstrated in these multi-colored sapphire earrings. All of the green, orange, yellow, pink and blue sapphires are naturally colored, and together weigh 1.36ct. They are set in 14ct yellow gold, with a channel setting for safety and smoothness.

Sapphires don’t have to be big, showy or expensive to look delicate and gorgeous. These pink sapphire earrings at right help you appreciate the pure, simple beauty of the stones, with their two 5mmx3mm natural pink sapphires. They are oval shaped, a cut which suits just about all women, and made for pierced ears. The 14ct yellow gold is also suitable for all skin types. The post and butterfly fittings are comfortable, and the earrings not too oversized, so they are perfect for everyday wear for feminine, sweet ladies!

In many cases, the gold quality and weight in a sapphire jewelry item plays more of a role in determining the price than the gemstone weight does! These Pandora pink sapphire earrings utilize cost effective, yet personality-filled sterling silver as a base. The pink and silver creates a cool yet feminine look, and the sapphires have an immediate backdrop of 14ct yellow gold to best bring out their color. The bead design is a popular one within the Pandora range - you’ll see it on a variety of charms as well as earrings, necklaces and rings. It creates an elegant, vintage look that can become cheekily retro or daintily ladylike, depending on the context. You can see how it works on the matching ring, pictured below the earrings.

While many of the sapphire items in store are within everyone’s reach (especially utilizing our layby program!), there are quite a few luxury items for sale where sapphire is a feature stone. The pink sapphire and blue sapphire ring at right is one of these (although at just over AU$1000, it represents more reasonably priced luxury!). The blue sapphires are the bright, skyblue Ceylon variety, and are teamed up with princess cut pink sapphires in a channel setting to create a half-eternity style ring. The sapphires weigh 1.25ct altogether, and are set in 18ct yellow gold to create a deliciously high quality ring.

Despite the fact that many of our ultra-luxury items have sapphires in them, there are also plenty of budget-friendly items. These princess cut stud earrings are a great example - while you can get round-cut and oval cut sapphire studs fairly readily, these princess ones are a bit of an anomaly, and very beautiful! The sapphires are 3mm across each, and set on 9ct white gold. The earrings are made for pierced ears, and are compact enough to leave in overnight without a problem.

Titanium is a wonderful, if unexpected match for sapphires - one of the toughest and most durable metals teamed up with one of the hardest stones can only make for luxury! This titanium sapphire ring is slick and contemporary, and quite suitable as a gift for either sex. Each sapphire is 2.25mm across, and there are two orange-red stones, two yellow stones and two pale blue stones. As an added bonus if this ring is a birthday gift, you can engrave up to 20 characters free on the inside of the band. Why not save the money you would have spent on a card, considering the gift is so gorgeous? ;-D

Sapphires are one of the most versatile stones that can be dug up from the ground, with their amazing variety of colors, sizes and styles. Keep browsing while you still have some inspiration, in the September birthstone gift ideas section. You can also check out our titanium ring builder, where you can incorporate sapphires into your customer made titanium ring design, or the Pandora pages, where there are plenty of sweet sapphire based charms for bracelets and necklaces.
