Topaz for November Birthdays
Topaz is one of our favourite gemstones here at Gilletts. As much as you can have a favourite among your children, anyway! As a gemstone, though, it just has so many benefits. It comes in a huge variety of colors, mostly blue and red, but also green, yellow and wine-colored. It is a mid-range gemstone, so while it isn’t common, most people can afford quite decently sized topazes in their jewelry. And for the budding jewellers out there, it is has a cleavage of [001] – Perfect. Topaz is the stone of friendship, and found in most corners of the globe, from Russia to the US, Sri Lanka to the Czech Republic, and Mexico to Sweden. So let’s see the ingenious inventions that people have created for November’s birthstone!
Pandora Lovepods six pod citrine, peridot, red topaz, blue topaz, amethyst and pink topaz 18ct yellow gold ring
The Lovepods collection is one of Pandora’s newest and most luxurious lines. Every piece is in full 18ct gold, and this is offset by the unique look of colored topazes, especially pink, blue and red. It is also one of the only ways in store to buy topazes in a bracelet – handy, considering there is such a wealth of products for matching. This particular bracelet has a red topaz, a blue topaz and a citrine in each ‘pod’, and measures 16cm long. There are alternate sizes available, and the clasp is set up so that the bracelet can be adjustable, with two alternate ‘hooks’.
The Lovepods rings come in a variety of pod multiples – if that all sounds a bit mathematic, all it means is that you can get rings with one gemstone, two gemstones, three gemstones or six gemstones. The Lovepods ring are made to be stacked on top of each other. This six-pod ring can only be stacked with other six-pod rings, but looks equally good with a three-pod bracelet! It has two of the same varieties of topaz, blue and red, as well as citrine that the bracelet has. Pink topaz, amethyst and peridot round out the six pods, making this one of the brighter, more rainbow colored Lovepods rings in store.
One of the main joys of topaz, though, is the feeling of having beautiful quality jewelry with a whole lot of sparkle, at not much of a price tag! The best way to enjoy the budget-friendliness of topaz is in the blue variety, which is most common, and in metals like this 9ct white gold. The earrings feature unusual square cut topazes, 4mm across, and have hook style fittings. The earrings are neatly sized, at just 1.9cm in length, so are suitable for everyday wear and probably even for wearing to bed on the odd occasion! They also ship to you for free, no mater where you are in Australia.
Topaz is also frequently combined with pearls in earrings for a lovely delicate look – but we couldn’t go past featuring the delicate filigree background on these big, but subtly colored topaz earrings. The topazes themselves are 9mm long, and the earrings measure 4cm from top to tip, when in your ears. The base is sterling silver, which is why you get a whole lot more gemstone for your dollar than the similarly priced, but smaller square cut topaz earrings above. These are designed quite faintly, and can be worn every day, or as an unexpected ‘gem’ for special occasions.
Topaz can often be found alongside a friend or two – the sky blue base works well with a whole different range of accent stones. In this ring it is combined with a deep, vibrant amethyst in a half-eternity ring style. There are five amethysts and four topazes altogether, set on a 9ct white gold base. While the ring looks very stylish and quite luxurious, it is actually very affordable – especially if you take advantage of our laybys and payment plans. The gemstone setting makes it difficult to resize this ring – you can imagine what would happen to all those carefully places topazes if somebody had to go bending the band in and out! You’ll have to spoil the surprise and get your loved one’s finger size measured accurately by a local jeweler … but its worth it for this gift, don’t you think!
You can see in the pink topaz and rhodolite garnet ring how a simple change of colors makes such a difference to the look of a piece of jewelry! This feminine yet boldly colored ring is set up with the same configuration as the one above it – four topazes (pink this time) and five accent stones, in a 9ct white gold ring with a 4mm band width. Note that with both this ring and the one above, the band depth is quite a bit larger than usual – they are most comfortable when worn as dress rings. Again, spoil the surprise and have your finger size measured accurately – it will save a lot of dollars and time on the other end of the gift-giving cycle.
Topazes are highly refractive (in our words, they sparkle good!), so are often used in place of diamonds in conjunction with a deeper, more velvety looking gemstone. In this case they are used as well as diamonds, because those deep-colored amethysts are just so big in comparison! The pink and purple look is a favorite of girls that never grew up all over the world … the five amethysts in this piece have a combined gemstone weight of 1.16ct, the topazes weigh .33ct altogether, and the diamonds are five in number, each just over 0.01ct to make up 0.07ct altogether. The white gold chain pictured is for display purposes only, but the 9ct white gold pendant would look just as nice with sterling silver or something a little more wallet-friendly.
We can come to truly trust our own judgment about the beauty of topazes when we see how much one of the world’s most influential jewelry designers loves them … Pandora jewelry features topazes throughout the range, and deliberately looks for the very specific colors of paraiba topazes (a sea blue-green) and buick topazes (storm cloud blue) to utilize in their jewelry designs. This one just uses the plain blue variety, but in a unique way – a round ‘bead’ cut rather than a faceted refractive cut. This still looks good because of the high refraction factor of topaz. The stones are set on sterling silver with the traditional oxidized flower and heart motif.
