Getting started

Where to find things - Layout overview

There are several components to this design your own titanium ring section that will appear on your computer screen.

On the left you will see a blue rectangular area. You will use the tools in that blue rectangular area to create your titanium ring.

Below the rectangular area you will see an image of a ring. As you select or change a ring option, the ring image will automatically update to reflect that change.

Between the blue rectangular area and the titanium ring image, you will sometimes see special messages. Those special messages will relate to the option that you are currently using.

On the right hand side you will see information section with four tabs, 'Info', 'Help', 'Save design', 'My designs'.

How to get started

Start by looking at the blue rectangular area. The blue rectangular area has four components. You will see four tabs at the top of the blue rectangular box that represent the four steps involved in designing a ring, 1. Base Options, 2. Inlays, 3. Gemstones and 4. Buy Ring. At any time, you can click on any of those tabs to see the available tool options and to add or modify your ring options.

You will only be able to work in one tab section at a time. If the tab heading background is a pale blue colour that tab is the active tool option. If the tab heading dark red background colour it means that it is currently inactive. To make a tab active, simply click on the tab heading.

For ease of use is best to start by following the tabs from left to right, from tab number one to number four. Though at any time you can go back to any one of the four tabs to add or change your selections.

When you start, select your preferences from the 1. Base Options tab.

Making a selection from the remaining tabs is optional, so for example, if you do not want gemstones in your titanium ring, you do not need to select the gemstones tab or if you do not want to add inlays to your ring, you do not need to use the inlays tab.

When you first start, you will see that the 1. Base Options tab will be active (you will know it is active as the tab background colour is highlighted in a pale blue colour.).

You will see that some of the options will be pre-selected for you by default. You can choose to change those options, or leave those options as you please.

By moving your mouse over each option you will see the name of that option.

Selecting options: To choose an option, simply click on the relevant object.

When you click on an option you will see the object will appear with a red border and the titanium ring image will be updated with that selection. A message relevant to that option will also appear. That message will appear in the area between the blue rectangular box and the titanium ring image. The price of your ring will also automatically be updated.

To change a selection simply click on your preferred option. You can change options as often as you like.

Changing Options: To change an option simply click on tab heading relevant to that option and then click on your preferred selection. The price and titanium ring image will then automatically be updated.

Base options

Jump straight to 'base options' sections:

The base options allow you to choose the ring style options for your ring. You can choose the shape and width of your ring, its color, texture and finger size in the base options section.

The base options include all of the options available for your ring style except inlay stripes and gemstones. You will be able to choose inlay stripes and gemstones in the inlay section and the gemstones section.

By moving your mouse over each option you will see the name of that option appear.

To choose an option, simply click on the relevant object (For the ring width and finger size you will click on the drop down or arrow buttons to make your selection).

Titanium color

The titanium color option refers to the color that your titanium ring would be.

There are four titanium colors to choose from - natural, blue, purple and blue moon.

By moving your mouse over each option you will see the name of that option.

The natural titanium color is the titanium's natural grayish color without any color enhancement.

The color appears as a medium gray color. If you choose the natural titanium color, your ring will permanently have the gray color.

The blue titanium color is similar to cobolt blue. The blue color appears slightly darker with a polished texture than with other textures. The blue color is achieved through oxidization.

The purple titanium color appears similar to a purple periwinkle colour. This color may appear darker as a deep periwinkle color when a satin finished texture is applied.

The purple color is achieved through oxidization.

The bluemoon color is a combination of pale pastel blue with a hint of pastel yellow. The bluemoon color is achieved through oxidization.

Information about titanium coloring: The blue, purple and blue moon titanium colors are achieved through a process called oxidization. Oxidization. is a natural process.

We do not use chemicals, paint, plating or pigments to produce the titanium colors.

The titanium rings with oxidized color are hypoallergenic.

Titanium is a type of refractory metal that has an interesting relationship with oxygen. Oxygen causes a structural change in the metal’s surface crystals creating an oxide. The oxide has a unique light refractory property that causes the titanium to appear in various colors to the human eye. The oxidization. is produced by a heating process that causes the titanium to change colour.

Please note that the oxidized color will not fade or chip though it can be scratched off. The titanium is not colored through the entire depth of the metal.

Although titanium is a very strong metal, as with any metal it can, and will scratch, and with scratching, the titanium colour can be removed. This means that the natural gray titanium color may show through when the oxidized color has been scratched as a result of everyday wear.

To help protect the titanium color from the appearance of everyday wear you can add a textured satin finish to your ring. A satin finish may help to protect the color a little more than a polished finish, though a satin finish will not completely prevent scratches.

If you choose a colored titanium ring, you may need have the ring re-colored in the future. Gillett's Jewellers offer a re-coloring service for a small fee.

Texture

The texture option refers to the texture of the outside surface of your ring.

This texture option is commonly referred to as the finish of the ring.

The texture will be applied to the outside surface of your ring only. The inside of your titanium ring will have a smooth surface.

The texture that your choose will be applied to all of the outside surface of your ring, including any inlay stripes that you add.

By moving your mouse over each option you will see the name of that option.

You can choose between a polished finish or one of the satin finished textures.

The polished texture can also be called a polished finish. The polished finish has a shiny smooth surface that reflects the maximum amount of light.

The light texture is a light satin finished texture that is added to the outside surface of the titanium ring.

The medium texture is a medium satin finished texture that is added to the surface of the titanium ring.

The heavy texture is a heavy satin finished texture that is added to the surface of the titanium ring.

You can choose the polished finish for any titanium ring, though if you have selected an oxidized titanium color, you may like to consider adding a textured finish to your ring to help protect the titanium color.

By adding a satin finish to your titanium ring, it can reduce the physical signs of everyday wear on your ring to a small extent. We suggest that you add a texture to your ring if you choose an oxidized colored titanium ring.

Ring shape

The ring shape option refers to the overall shape of your ring.

The ring shape refers to the outside surface of the ring rather than the inside surface of the ring.

You have three options for the ring shape the flat style, soft rounded and heavily rounded.

By moving your mouse over each option you will see the name of that option.

The flat ring shape refers to a ring shape where the band has a flat rather than a curved outside surface. The edges of the band are very slightly rounded for comfortable wear.

The soft rounded ring shape refers to a ring shape where the band has a slightly curved domed outside surface rather than a flat surface. The edges of the band are very slightly rounded for comfortable wear.

The heavy rounded ring shape refers to a ring shape where the band has a higher domed or more curved outside surface rather than a flat or soft rounded surface. The edges of the band are very slightly rounded for comfortable wear.

Ring width

The ring width option refers to the total width of your titanium ring.

This measurement does not refer to the internal diameter of the ring, this measurement refers to the surface width of the band.

The width is measured in millimeters (mm). There are 24mm to an inch. To convert the mm width to inches divide the mm width by 24. For example 6mm equals a 1/4 inch (6/24=0.25).

There are two ways that you can select your ring width. You may click on the drop down box to select your preferred width from the selected list, or, you can use the up and down arrow buttons to increase or decrease the ring width.

As you increase and decrease the ring width, you will see the titanium ring image width change accordingly.

Finger size

The finger size option refers to the internal size of the ring.

The finger size is measured on a finger size scale rather than a millimeter diameter measurement.

There are several finger size scales used around the world.

If you are from the United States or Canada you should automatically see the US numerical finger size scale from sizes 4 to 15.

If you are from Australia, the United Kingdom or New Zealand you should automatically see the alphabetical finger size scale from letters H to Z+.

If you are from Europe you should automatically see the numerical finger size scale from sizes 47 to 73.

When you use this web site you should automatically see the finger sizes relevant to your country. If you do not see the finger size scale you can change the finger size scale that appears.

To change the finger size scale that appears you should click on the 'Selected Currency - change your currency' link on the Gillett's Jewellers home page (you will find this link on other pages on the Gillett's Jewellers web site also).

You should select the country currency relevant to to the finger size scale that you need. The finger size scale will then automatically change the finger size scale relevant to the country that you selected.

Inlays

Jump straight to 'inlays' sections:

The inlays options section will allow you to add 1, 2 or 3 inlay stripes to your titanium ring.

You will see the tab heading "2. Inlays" in the blue rectangular area. If you would like to add metal inlay stripes to your ring, click on that Inlays tab heading.

Inlays refer to the metal stripes that can be inserted in your titanium ring.

When you click on the Inlays tab heading you will see a second row of navigation appear with the headings "Top Inlay", "Middle Inlay" and "Bottom Inlay".

The top inlay means that the inlay stripe will be positioned towards the top edge of the ring.

The middle inlay means that the inlay stripe will be positioned through the horizontal center of the ring.

The bottom inlay means that the inlay stripe will be positioned towards the bottom edge of the ring.

Adding Inlays

When you click on the 'inlays' tab the 'top inlay' section will automatically appear as the active selection (The active tab will have a pale blue background colour for the active tab heading).

Not all people will choose an inlay stripe for their ring. For that reason, your ring will not include any inlay stripes by default.

If you would like to add a 'top inlay' you should click on the button that reads "Add a top inlay stripe".

If you would like an inlay but you do not want a top inlay, you can skip to the middle inlay or bottom inlay tabs.

Whilst in the middle inlay tab if you wanted a middle inlay you should click on the link that reads "Add a middle inlay stripe".

Whilst in the bottom inlay tab if you wanted to add a bottom inlay, you should click on the link that reads "Add a bottom inlay stripe".

When you click on one of the add an inlay buttons you will see that an inlay will be added to your titanium ring image. You will also see a red tick appearing for the relevant inlay option.

If at any time you would like to remove an inlay from your ring, simply select the appropriate inlay (you select the inlay by clicking on the inlay with your mouse cursor or by clicking on the relevant top, middle or bottom inlay tabs) and then click on either the "Remove inlay button" or click on the cross image .

If you click on one or more of those 'add an inlay' links to add one or more inlay stripes, you will be presented with two or three options. Those inlay options are the 'Inlay Width' the 'Inlay Metal Type' and the 'Distance from Edge' options.

When designing your ring you should note that your inlays do not all need to be alike. You can choose different options for each of your inlay stripes. For example you can choose one inlay stripe in gold and another in platinum. You can choose one inlay stripe to be 2mm wide and another to be 1mm wide.

Inlay width

The inlay width option allows you to choose the width of your inlay stripe.

The width of the inlay stripe does not refer to the total width of your ring. The width of your inlay stripe refers to the width of the metal inlay stripe that will be added to your ring.

The default width for the inlay stripes is 1mm. You can choose to leave the width at 1mm or you can increase the inlay width.

The inlay width is measured in millimeters (mm).

There are three ways that you can select your inlay width.

1. You can click on the drop down box to select your preferred width from the selected list, or

2. You can use the up and down arrow buttons to increase or decrease the inlay width, or

3. You can use the right and left arrow buttons on your keyboard to increase or decrease the inlay width. (The right keyboard arrow key will decrease the width incrementally. The left keyboard arrow will increase the width incrementally.)

If you use your keyboard buttons to change the inlay width, you will need to make sure that the inlay you wish to change is the active object. To make the inlay the active object either use your mouse to click on the inlay that you would like to change; or; click on the relevant tab (top inlay, middle inlay or bottom inlay) from the Inlay tabs.

As you increase and decrease the ring width, you will see the titanium ring image width change accordingly.

If at any time you select an inlay width that would cause two or more inlays to overlap each other, the web site will adjust the width selection for you so that the inlay stripes sit adjacent to the next closest inlay stripe. (It is not possible to overlap two inlays on top of one another.)

Distance from edge

The 'distance from edge' option allows you to choose the position of your inlay stripes.

This distance from edge option applies to the top inlay and bottom inlay only. (The middle inlay will always be positioned in the horizontal center of the ring).

The measurement is measured in millimeters (mm).

The distance from edge measurement refers to the mm measurement from the edge of the ring to the closest edge of the inlay stripe. For example, for the top edge it means the distance between the top edge of the ring and the top edge of the inlay stripe.

The default for the 'distance from edge' option is 1mm. You can choose to leave that 'distance from edge' at 1mm or you can increase the distance from the edge.

There are four ways that you can select your inlay width.

1. You can click on the drop down box to select your preferred width from the selected list, or

2. You can use the up and down arrow buttons to increase or decrease the inlay width, or

3. You can use the up and down arrow buttons on your keyboard to increase or decrease the inlay width.

4. You can use your mouse cursor to drag the inlay stripe to a position closer or further away from the edge of the ring.

If you use your keyboard buttons or your mouse to change the position of your inlay stripe, you will need to make sure that inlay you wish to change is the active object. To make the inlay the active object either use your mouse to click on the inlay that you would like to change; or; click on the relevant tab (top inlay or bottom inlay) from the Inlay tabs.

As you increase or decrease the 'distance from edge', you will see the titanium ring image change accordingly.

If at any time you select a 'distance from edge' that would cause two or more inlays to overlap each other, the web site will adjust the 'distance from edge' selection for you so that the inlay stripes sit adjacent to the next closest inlay stripe. (It is not possible to overlap two inlays on top of one another.)

Inlay metal

The inlay metal option allows you to choose the metal that will be used in the relevant inlay stripe for your titanium ring.

There are eight metals that you can choose from. (Example images below are the metals with a light texture)

You can also mix and match different metals for different inlay stripes. For example you can choose one inlay stripe in 18kt yellow gold and another in platinum, or one inlay in silver and one inlay in 9kt rose gold.

The inlay stripe metal will automatically default to 9kt yellow gold. You can choose to leave that 'metal type' as 9kt yellow gold or you can choose one of the other metal options.

By moving your mouse over each option you will see the name of that option.

By choosing the 9kt yellow gold option the active inlay stripe will be made in 9kt yellow gold.

9kt yellow gold has a yellow colour. The colour of 9kt yellow gold is a little paler yellow than the 18kt yellow gold.

9kt yellow gold is a durable metal that is suitable for every day wear. 9kt yellow gold is made of 375 parts gold per thousand parts. It is almost exactly the same as 10ct gold and has the same characteristics as 9kt gold.

By choosing the 18kt yellow gold option the active inlay stripe will be made in 18kt yellow gold.

18kt yellow gold has a yellow color. The yellow colour of 18kt yellow gold is more intense yellow color than 9kt yellow gold.

18kt yellow gold is a strong durable metal that is suitable for every day wear. 18kt yellow gold is made of 750 parts gold per thousand parts.

By choosing the 9kt white gold option the active inlay stripe will be made in 9kt white gold.

9kt white gold has a white-gray color. 9kt white gold has a color quite similar to natural titanium. The color difference between white gold and titanium can be seen, though the metals are not visually distinguished as the other inlay metal options.

The color difference is more noticeable when a light, medium or heavy texture is selected (You can choose the texture option for your ring in the Base Options tab section).

9kt white gold is a strong durable metal that is suitable for every day wear. 9kt white gold is made of 750 parts gold per thousand parts. We do not use nickel in our white gold.

By choosing the 18kt white gold option the active inlay stripe will be made in 18kt white gold.

18kt white gold has a white-gray color. 18kt white gold has a color quite similar to natural titanium. The color difference between white gold and titanium can be seen, though the metals are not visually distinguished as the other inlay metal options.

The color difference is more noticeable when a light, medium or heavy texture is selected (You can choose the texture option for your ring in the Base Options tab section).

9kt rose gold has a reddish colour. The color of 9kt rose gold is a little deeper than the reddish color of 18kt rose gold.

9kt rose gold is a durable metal that is suitable for every day wear. 9kt rose gold is made of 375 parts gold per thousand parts. It is almost exactly the same as 10ct rose gold and has the same characteristics as 9kt rose gold.

By choosing the 18kt rose gold option the active inlay stripe will be made in 18kt rose gold.

18kt rose gold has a reddish color. The reddish color of 18kt rose gold is a little paler than the reddish color of 9kt rose gold.

18kt rose gold is a strong durable metal that is suitable for every day wear. 18kt rose gold is made of 750 parts gold per thousand parts.

By choosing the platinum option the active inlay stripe will be made in platinum.

The color of platinum is somewhat similar to the color of natural titanium. The color difference between platinum and natural titanium is more noticeable than the color difference between titanium and white gold.

The color difference is more noticeable when a light, medium or heavy texture is selected (You can choose the texture option for your ring in the Base Options tab section).

Platinum is a strong durable metal that is suitable for every day wear. The platinum used has a high platinum content of 950 which is 95% platinum.

By choosing the silver option the active inlay stripe will be made in silver.

Silver has a white-gray color. The difference between the color of silver and the natural titanium color is more noticeable than for the other white-gray metals.

Gemstones

Jump straight to 'gemstones' sections:

The gemstones options section will allow you to add gemstones to your titanium ring.

You will see the tab heading "3. Gemstones" in the blue rectangular area. If you would like to add one or gemstones to your ring, click on that Gemstones heading.

Adding a Gemstone

When you click on the Gemstones tab heading a gemstone will be automatically added to your ring. You will see that a gemstone has been selected for your ring by the red tick image .

If you would like to remove a gemstone from your ring, simply click on the button that reads "Remove active gemstone" or click on the cross image .

If you click on the "3. Gemstones" tab you will be presented with four options. Those gemstones options are the 'type of gemstone', 'setting type', 'size' and 'position the gemstone'.

When designing your ring you should note that your gemstones do not all need to be alike. You can choose different options for each of your gemstones. For example you can choose one diamond and two pink sapphires. You can choose one gemstone size to be 5 point and others to be 3 points.

Type of Gemstone

The type of gemstone option allows you to choose the gemstone(s) that will be used in your titanium ring.

There are seven gemstones that you can choose from.

By moving your mouse over each option you will see the name of that option.

You can also mix and match different gemstones. For example you can choose one diamond and two blue sapphires, or one black sapphire and two white diamonds.

The default for the 'gemstone' that appears in your ring will be a white diamond. You can choose to leave that 'gemstone' as a white diamond or you can choose a different gemstone type.

A white diamond will be used if you select the white diamond option. The white diamonds used are high quality diamonds. The white diamonds have a G colour and a Vs clarity. They are round brilliant cut fully faceted natural diamonds.

A black diamond will be used if you select the black diamond option. The black diamonds used are naturally black in colour. The black diamonds are round brilliant cut fully faceted diamonds.

A red ruby gemstone will be used if you select the ruby option. The rubies used are good quality natural rubies with red colour in a round brilliant cut.

A pink sapphire will be used if you select the pink sapphire option. The pink sapphires used are natural sapphires with a natural pink colour in a round brilliant cut shape.

A yellow sapphire will be used if you select the yellow sapphire option. The yellow sapphires used are natural sapphires with a natural yellow colour in a round brilliant cut shape.

A black sapphire will be used if you select the black sapphire option. The black sapphires used are natural sapphires with a natural black colour in a round brilliant cut shape.

A blue sapphire will be used if you select the blue sapphire option. The blue sapphires used are natural sapphires with a natural blue colour in a round brilliant cut shape.

Setting type

The 'setting type' option allows you to choose the way that your gemstone(s) will be set in your titanium ring.

There are two setting types that you can choose from. The setting options are a hammer setting or a grain setting.

Both of these setting techniques will securely hold the gemstones in place. Both setting types are suitable for everyday wear.

It is possible to incorporate a grain setting for one gemstone and a hammer setting for another gemstone in the one ring, however, we would suggest that you select the same setting style for all of your gemstones in the ring one.

The default for the 'setting' that appears for your ring will be a a hammer setting. You can choose to leave that 'setting' as a hammer setting, or you can choose a different setting type.

By moving your mouse over each option you will see the name of that option.

A hammer setting will be used to set your gemstone if you select the hammer setting option.

A hammer setting means that the gemstone is set in the ring with the top surface of the gemstone flush with the height of the top surface of the ring.

With a hammer setting there are no visible claws over the surface of the gemstone.

The hammer setting is the most popular gemstone setting for titanium rings.

A grain setting will be used to set your selected gemstone if you select the grain setting option. A grain setting is sometimes also called a pave.

A grain setting means that the gemstone is set in the ring with the top surface of the gemstone flush with the height of the top surface of the ring.

A grain setting uses four very small claws on four points of the gemstone. With a grain setting, there is a square shaped softly sloping indentation in the metal around the edges of the gemstone. The grain setting can make the gemstone look a little more like a square gemstone.

Gemstone Size

The gemstone 'size' option allows you to choose the size of your gemstone(s).

The size of the gemstones is measured in a jewellery measurement called points. You may be familiar with the jewellery term carats. Carats is also used to measure the size of gemstones. There are 100 points to one carat. That means that a 5 point gemstone is a 0.05ct.

Points are actually measured by the weight of the gemstone rather than its size, though for ease of understanding you can see the mm sizes of the gemstones below:

The default gemstone size for the gemstones is 3 points. You can choose to leave the gemstone size at 3 points or you can increase or decrease the gemstone size.

There are two ways that you can select your gemstone size.

1. You can click on the drop down box to select your preferred size from the selected list, or

2. You can use the up and down arrow buttons to increase or decrease the inlay width.

Before using either of these options to change the size of your gemstone you need to make sure that the gemstone you wish to change is the active gemstone. To make the gemstone the active object either use your mouse to click on the gemstone that you would like to change; or; if you currently only have one gemstone in your ring simply click on the "3. Gemstones" tab tab.

The active gemstone will appear with a white box around the image. The white dot-dash box will not actually appear on your ring, it is simply an indication to show the active gemstone.

As you increase or decrease the gemstone size, you will see the titanium ring image change accordingly.

You should note that there must be a minimum distance around the edge of each gemstone setting. For example, it is not possible to set a gemstone to touch a gemstone next to it.

If at any time you select a gemstone size that would cause two or more gemstones to overlap each other, or to be set too close to each other the gemstones will appear with red crosses through them and an error message will appear explaining the reason for the error. To correct the error you must either move one or more of the gemstones (see the 'gemstone position' section) or you must change the size of the gemstones.

Position the gemstone

The 'position the gemstone' option allows you to choose the position of your gemstones.

There are five ways that you can move your gemstone around on your ring. You can use one or any combination of these methods in any sequence.

1. You can click on your gemstone and use your mouse to move the gemstone around, or

2. You can use the up, down, left and right arrow keys on your keyboard to move the gemstone.

3. You can use the horizontal position helper to horizontally center your gemstone. This option will move the gemstone from its current position and move it up or down to the horizontal center of the ring.

4. You can use the vertical position helper to vertically center your gemstone. This option will move the gemstone from its current position and move it left or right to the vertical center of the ring.

5. You can use the horizontal/vertical position helper to horizontally and vertically center your gemstone. This option will move the gemstone from its current position to the vertical and horizontal center of the ring.

Before using any of these options to change the size of your gemstone you need to make sure that the gemstone you wish to change is the active gemstone. To make the gemstone the active object either use your mouse to click on the gemstone that you would like to change; or; if you currently only have one gemstone in your ring simply click on the "3. Gemstones" tab tab.

When you move your gemstones around you will sometimes see a red cross appear on your gemstone and a red error message appear.

When positioning your gemstones you should note that there must be a minimum distance around the edge of each gemstone settings. When a gemstone is the active object you will see the white dot-dash box appear around the gemstone. That red dot-dash box shows the area that is required for each gemstone.

If that white dot-dash box area overlaps with another gemstone area the error message will appear and the red cross will appear through the gemstone. To correct this, simply move your gemstone to a new position until the red cross disappears.

The red crosses will appear over a gemstone when either of two events occurs:

1. The gemstone is positioned too close to another gemstone

2. The gemstone is placed over an inlay stripe where both edges of the same inlay stripe are covered by the gemstone.

It is possible to incorporate inlay stripes and gemstones in the one ring. The things you should note are :

A gemstone can overlap one edge of an inlay stripe.

A gemstone can overlap one edge of one inlay stripe and one edge or a separate inlay stripe.

A gemstone can be positioned within the one wide inlay stripe (provided the gemstone does not overlap both edges of the inlay)

If a gemstone is positioned too close to an edge of the ring the web site will automatically move the gemstone to the closest possible position to the edge of the ring.

Adding another gemstone

You may add more than one gemstone to your ring.

To add another gemstone to your ring simply click on the button that reads "Add another gemstone".

The new gemstone will default to a 3 point diamond. You can use the gemstone options to select your preferred gemstone, its size, setting type and position.

If you have previously removed a gemstone and you now wish to add a gemstone to your ring, you can also click on the button that reads "Add another gemstone".

Removing gemstones

If you would like to remove a gemstone from your ring, simply click use your mouse to click on the gemstone that you would like to remove.

That gemstone will then become the active object. The active gemstone will appear with a white dot-dash box around the image.

To remove that selected gemstone simply either click on the button that reads "Remove active gemstone" or click on the cross image .
