Choosing the width for mens wedding rings

Most men aren’t accustomed to wearing rings, so when it comes to choosing their wedding band, some men aren’t sure what width to choose for their ring.

Most men choose a 6mm width for their wedding ring. A 6mm width suits fingers of almost all shapes and sizes. A 6mm width is also a very comfortable width to wear for most men.

A 7mm width is the next most popular, particularly for men with long fingers or larger hands. Most men also find that the 7mm width is comfortable.

6mm 7mm and 8mm Wedding Rings

Widths narrower than 6mm are generally selected by men for a few reasons, such as men who are specifically wanting a narrower band, men who find the wider bands less comfortable, men with slender fingers or smaller hands, or, simply men that like the appearance of a particular ring design that is available in a narrower width.

Bands wider than 7mm are normally reserved for men who are specifically wanting a wide band, or for more intricate designs that are only available in wider widths.

No matter which width you choose, it’s always best to remember these three things:

  1. Try on a sample ring in the width that you intend to purchase, to make sure that the width is comfortable for you, and suits your hand.
  2. Make sure that you have your finger size measured accurately by a local jeweler before purchasing your wedding ring. When having your finger size measured, mention the width of your intended ring – that’s important because in some cases a larger finger size will be needed for 7mm or wider ring widths. For wider rings (7mm or wider), ask the local jeweler to use wide ring measuring rings if they have them.
  3. Don’t worry too much about which width to choose. As long as the width is comfortable for you, it’s better to focus your attention on choosing your ring design rather than worrying about which ring width to choose.

When viewing men’s wedding rings on the Gillett’s Jewellers site, you can click on the  Width  tab and select your desired width to see all of the available ring styles in that width.
