The worst gemstones for engagement rings

Some gemstones although beautiful, colorful and unique are not necessarily suited for use in engagement rings. Some couples wonder why they don’t see many gemstone options for engagement rings. Some of those couples assume that it’s a traditional constraint rather than a practical constraint that reduces the types and variety of gemstone engagement rings on offer at most jewelry stores. There is a practical reason why there’s usually a small range of gemstone engagement rings available. We do not recommend that the following gemstones be selected for engagement rings : opal, emerald, amethyst, garnet, peridot, pearl, turquoise, onyx, mother of pearl, amber and topaz. Opal ring An opal ring – beautiful but fragile! Amethyst and diamond white gold ring Amethyst and diamond white gold ring These gemstones are suitable for use in dress rings, fashion rings, earrings, pendants and other forms of jewelry. Those types of jewelry however are not designed to be worn everyday for many many years. With constant wear and use, these softer gemstones may scratch or become chipped or cracked. These gemstones are softer than the gemstones traditionally used in engagement rings. The gemstones that we recommend for engagement rings; recommended because they are hard and durable; are diamonds, sapphires and rubies. That is our recommendation, however if you are fixed on choosing one of the softer gemstones for your engagement ring, you may naturally still choose to do so, though you should be open to the possibility that the softer gemstone may need to be re-cut or replaced in the future, should it become scratched or damaged. When viewing engagement rings on the Gillett’s Jewellers site, try clicking on the Gemstone tab and selecting your desired gemstone. You will then be presented with a variety of engagement rings that contain that gemstone.
