What makes a quality pearl

Lustre — the mirror-like glow of a pearl's surface — is the most important quality factor. Also look at surface quality (fewer blemishes is better), shape (round pearls are the most prized, though baroque and other shapes have their own appeal), and consistent colour matching in a strand.

Caring for pearls

Pearls are softer than most gemstones and need gentle care. Put them on after applying perfume, makeup and hairspray, wipe them with a soft cloth after wear, and store them separately from other jewellery to avoid scratches. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, which can damage pearls.
